More than 4,200 plant taxa have been documented statewide, including 235 rare species and over 100 endemics found nowhere else on Earth.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Eight distinct <a href=\"https:\/\/nmswap.org\/ecoregions\">Ecoregions<\/a> support this diversity, from the hot, dry Chihuahuan Desert to the alpine peaks of the Southern Rockies. Some species occupy only narrow wetland or riparian habitats, such <a href=\"https:\/\/explorer.natureserve.org\/Taxon\/ELEMENT_GLOBAL.2.722925\/North_American_Warm_Desert_Cienega\">ci\u00e9negas<\/a>\u2014rare desert wetlands that are increasingly threatened by declining water tables and other human-driven stressors.<\/p>\n<p>The Forestry Division\u2019s Endangered Plant Program maintains the State Endangered Plant Species List under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emnrd.nm.gov\/sfd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/19.21.2-NMAC.pdf\" title=\"NMAC 19.21.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">19.21.2 NMAC<\/a>. <span style=\"color: black;\">The Program is responsible for conserving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emnrd.nm.gov\/sfd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/NM-ENDANGERED-PLANT-List_2023.pdf\">state-listed plants<\/a> through research, surveys, long-term monitoring, habitat assessment, and public education.
