Beginning Aug.\u00a01 through Sept.\u00a030, all designated primitive and beach camping areas\u00a0will be available at no cost.\u00a0This benefit also extends to nearby Caballo Lake State Park.\u00a0Primitive campsites\u00a0are\u00a0basic, undeveloped areas without designated sites or built-in amenities\u00a0connections to water or electricity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These changes follow the end of the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Bureau of Reclamation\u2019s seasonal release of water from the Elephant Butte reservoir, which should stabilize water levels for the rest of the summer.\u00a0\u00a0The extended camping stays will\u00a0give\u00a0visitors more\u00a0time\u00a0to\u00a0enjoy\u00a0their state\u00a0parks\u00a0and visit surrounding communities\u00a0as\u00a0the state continues\u00a0adapting\u00a0to drought conditions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDrought is changing the way New Mexicans\u00a0and other visitors\u00a0experience their state parks,\u00a0but it doesn\u2019t change our commitment to keeping these places accessible and welcoming,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Toby Vel\u00e1squez,\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">director of the New Mexico State Parks\u00a0division.<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cExtending camping stays gives\u00a0visitors more flexibility to\u00a0explore their\u00a0state\u00a0parks\u00a0and\u00a0experience\u00a0all that\u00a0the\u00a0surrounding\u00a0communities have to offer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elephant Butte\u00a0and Caballo\u00a0Lake State Park have\u00a0long been important recreation destinations\u00a0and economic anchors\u00a0for Sierra County and southern New Mexico. While historically low reservoir levels are affecting boating and water access, the parks\u00a0remain\u00a0open for\u00a0boating,\u00a0camping, fishing,\u00a0birdwatching,\u00a0shoreline\u00a0recreation\u00a0and other activities where conditions allow.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0local and regional\u00a0communities surrounding state parks are an\u00a0important part of the\u00a0park visitor\u00a0experience.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c&#8221;When visitors stay at\u00a0their state parks, their experience\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0end at the park boundary,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vel\u00e1squez<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said. \u201cThey grab breakfast, buy gas, visit local\u00a0businesses\u00a0and explore the\u00a0local\u00a0communities. Beginning Aug. 1 through Sept. 30, all designated primitive and beach camping areas will be available at no cost. This benefit also extends to nearby Caballo Lake State Park.
