Cookes Peak West mine Safeguard Project

SUMMARY OF WORK

The Cookes Peak West Mine Safeguard Project – Phase IIIA area is approximately 20 miles north of the town of Deming, in Luna County, New Mexico. The project area (see Figures 1 and 2) is on BLM land in Sections 14 and 23 of Township 20 South, Range 9 West (USGS 7.5’ Dwyer SE and OK Canyon Quadrangles).

This project involved the following work:

  • Backfilling 21 mine features;
  • Backfilling 3 mine features with waste rock over polyurethane foam;
  • Constructing a grouted culvert with bat gate at one adit;
  • Constructing prefabricated tubular steel bat gates at 11 mine openings and delivering gates to each site by helicopter;
  • Constructing a custom-fitted steel gate closure;
  • Seeding all areas disturbed by construction.
