Heron Lake State Park
Tucked among the tall pines, Heron Lake is a serene “quiet lake,” where only no‑wake boating is allowed—perfect water for every kind of paddle craft.
Beyond paddling, the lake is a haven for sailing, cross‑country skiing, and hiking. Anglers prize it for its record‑size trout and kokanee salmon, and winter brings excellent ice‑fishing conditions. A variety of shoreline campgrounds—both primitive and developed—offer options for every style of camper.
Wildlife is abundant here. Visitors may spot mountain lions, black bears, elk, deer, marmots, bald eagles, and osprey.
Access the hiking and fishing trail along the gorgeous Rio Chama from the dramatic caprock stairway near Heron Dam. The 5.5-mile trail, which crosses the river by suspension bridge, affords panoramic views and an adventurous route to neighboring El Vado Lake
