SUMMARY OF WORK

The project site is located about three miles west of Raton, NM within the privately owned Vermejo Park Ranch.  The Dutchman Mine Wetland Mitigation Site covers approximately 0.95 acres that are permitted under a USACE Nationwide Permit #27.  Following maintenance work in 2014, erosion within a rock rundown drainage and break out leakage from wetlands onto the adjacent access road had compromised the quality of the wetlands and the New Mexico Abandoned Mine Land Programs (AMLP) ability to meet the conditions of the USACE Nationwide Permit.

This project involves the following work:

  • rebuild the rock rundown within the original channel using imported rock
  • use imported soil fill to make an earthen berm to contain leakage from the wetland
  • remove excess mulch used in 2014 that had been inhibiting vegetation establishment in limited areas
