Overview

The AML Program, in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), is responding to abate hazardous conditions caused by open subsidence features above an abandoned underground coal mine in Allison, New Mexico.

The Phase III work addresses continuing subsidence issues at the Allison project site. In 2016, the AML Program completed an investigation and construction to safeguard a large sinkhole partially located in the backyard of a residential property in Allison.  Shortly after completion of this phase of work, a secondary sinkhole opened at the site, and ground cracks surrounding the sinkhole area continued to widen and deepen.  Growing subsidence features present a significant risk to property and public health and safety at the Allison site.

This project involves the following work:

  • Site clearing and grubbing
  • Drilling and injection grouting to construct a bulkhead in underground mine workings and to compact subsurface soils
  • Excavation and backfill within an existing sinkhole and associated tension cracks and piping holes associated with underground mine workings
  • Re-establishing an existing drainage channel
  • Seedbed preparation, seeding, and mulching
