Cookes Peak West Mine Safeguard Project – Phase II
SUMMARY OF WORK
The Cookes Peak West Mine Safeguard Project – Phase II area is approximately 20 miles north of the town of Deming, in Luna County, New Mexico. The project area (see Figures 1 and 2) is on BLM land in Sections 14 and 23 of Township 20 South, Range 9 West (USGS 7.5’ Dwyer SE and OK Canyon Quadrangles).
This project involves the following work:
- Backfilling 25 mine features using mine waste and other nearby material, some of which have limited access available and will require backfilling by hand;
- Construction of horizontal bat gates at 31 mine shafts or stopes;
- Construction of a bat gate in rock bulkhead at one adit;
- Construction of a bat gate placed inside a corrugated steel pipe culvert at one adit; and
- Seeding of all areas disturbed by construction.
