Fenton Lake State Park Boating
Description: Beautiful high mountain lake surrounded by Ponderosa Pines in the valley of the Rio Cebolla of the Jemez Mountains. Popular with families for both day use lake fishing and overnight camping along the Rio Cebolla.
Directions: About 80 miles west of Santa Fe in the Jemez Mountains.
From Abuquerque travel north on I-25 to Exit 242. Turn left, west on US 50N about 22 miles to San Ysidro. In San Ysidro turn right (north) onto NM4. Take NM4 north through Jemez Pueblo, Canon, and Jemez Springs. 8 miles north of Jemez Springs turn left (west) on NM126. Travel on NM126 about 8 miles to the park entrance. The last few miles are on a dirt road that can be muddy after a rain.

Generally does not vary more than 18″ from fall to spring (Drops in the fall from evaporation an raises in the spring with snow runoff.)

1 The ramp has 2 lanes with a shallow angle limiting launching of vessels greater than 16′.

Fishing access was improved in 1995 on the West side of the lake for shoreline fishing and ADA fishing pads right up to the waters edge 100% accessible from parking with acessible tables and toilets.

Prevailing Winds:
Wind does not adversely affect the lake surface. The lake is in a hollow surrounded by high ridges which has a tendency to keep high wind to a rare occurance.
Fish Species:
Rainbow, Brown and Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout. Other species: Chub Sucker.
Special Boating Restrictions:
New Mexico State Parks Regulations 16.5 Fenton Lake: Vessels with motors or sails are prohibited.
Specifically, gas motors, sails are prohibited.

No services for boats in the area.

Land Status:
Day use area on east end of lake is available for picnicking and fishing. Accessed by boat and vehicle after May 1.
