The Lake Valley Mine Safeguard Project – Phase III project area is located in and around the ghost town of Lake Valley, seventeen miles south of the town of Hillsboro, in Sierra County, New Mexico. The project area (see Figures 1 and 2) is on private land in Sections 20, 21, 28, and 29, of Township 18 South, Range 7 West.

This project involved the following work:

  • Backfilling of 114 mine openings using mine waste, other nearby material and material imported from designated borrow areas where specified. Blasting is allowed at 8 designated mine openings and as otherwise allowed by the Project Engineer.
  • Re-construction of indicated access road and construction of berm.
  • Closure of indicated and temporary construction access roads.
  • Seeding of all areas disturbed by construction.

Runyan Construction of Silver City, NM, was the contractor for this project.
