The Smokey Bear Song and a Smokey Bear Play
Lyrics and music for song

The Smokey Bear Song was written by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins in 1952. They are also responsible for “Frosty the Snowman” and “Peter Cottontail.” The song is responsible for the confusion between Smokey Bear and Smokey ‘the’ Bear. When the song was written, Smokey Bear didn’t fit the music so ‘the’ was added to make the name ‘fit’ the music. The Smokey Bear Act was passed in 1952 to officially name the program the “Smokey Bear Program.”
